Built prior to 1810, Alumni Hall is among the oldest buildings on the University of Delaware campus and has housed the Alumni Office since 1940. Alumni Hall is one of 17 buildings on the University's campus listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built as a private residence by Dr. Joseph Chamberlain for his family of ten, Alumni Hall has had numerous functions since it was acquired by the University in 1908—fraternity house, YMCA, library, local draft board headquarters during World War I, and later a hospital during the great influenza epidemic of 1918. From 1918 until 1940, it was the location of the Departments of English and History. Alumni may be familiar with the architectural fanlight window of the building, which faces the North Green. The fanlight window was the symbolic image of the University of Delaware Alumni Association until the creation of its new logo in 2007. Alumni are welcome to stop by Alumni Hall at any time between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parking is available at the parking meters on Main Street or in the Trabant University Garage. Alumni Hall is located on East Main Street between the Academy Street and South College Avenue intersections. |
