Doug Glanville throws into question every stereotype you may harbor about ex-pro-athletes. Both an Ivy League academic and a pro baseball player, Glanville has managed to bridge the worlds of sports, academics and commerce better than most, showing us that brains, brawn and business are not mutually exclusive.
Currently, he serves as an MLB analyst for ComcastSportsNet in Chicago, and is a regular on XM Radio. Most notably, perhaps, he writes his own Op-Ed column, "Heading Home," for the New York Times online.
Glanville was drafted 12th overall by the Cubs in 1991. But before starting his career, the "Academic Ambassador to Baseball" returned to the University of Pennsylvania to finish his degree in Systems Engineering. Beginning in 1996, through nine seasons with the Cubs, Yankees, Rangers and Phillies, Glanville posted great numbers at bat (over 1,000 career hits) and on the field (293 straight games without an error). Equally important was his work in the boardrooms, serving on the Executive Subcomittee of the MLB Players Association, and as a player rep. (He is a student of labor history).
Today, in his New York Times columns, he gives us a vivid, nuanced and fearlessly honest look at the life of a pro athlete. On the business front, Glanville is the founder of GK Alliance, LLC, a green-friendly real estate company specializing in residential building in Chicago.
