DC Alumni Club Flag Football Team

One of the most successful alumni events over the past several years has been our participation in Capital Alumni Network (CAN) sports teams. Having just concluded our fourth softball season, we're gearing up for our fourth co-ed flag football campaign, and we would love for you to join us.  If you are interested, contact UD Alum and team coach Billy Kinberg at billyk34@yahoo.com

We play local alumni from other schools (last year, there were teams representing 56 different schools), and 75% of all team members must be alums of the school for which they play; so we have some room for your non-Blue Hen friends.

This is a Co-Ed, non-contact league. A team consists of eight players on the field, three of which must be female.  There are no limits on roster size, so the more the merrier!

We play most of our games in Anacostia Park which has plenty of free parking, and while it is not easily Metro accessible, we have always been good about car-pooling. The regular season typically runs from September through November, with the playoffs in December. Game days are Saturday and Sunday, game times are as early as 8:00 am and as late as 2:00 pm with games lasting about an hour (we will have no more than TWO early games). Teams typically play one game per week, sometimes more, depending on their schedule.  The regular season commences the weekend of September 6-7. We play 10 games over a 12-week schedule, which means there is a good chance that we will have at least one, and possibly more, weekends with two games so that we can schedule against conflicts.

Other than $100 per team for insurance, CAN only charges players a fee for the post-season tournament. That fee is typically around $30-$40, but it also includes a HUGE post-season party with complementary food and drink.  Our player fee has typically been about $25, but we re-evaluate that amount each year. Last year, after paying the $25 participation fee, there was enough money left over to buy-down our per-player tournament fee to about $20. Also in previous years, players purchased matching uniforms which were $40 each.

As a team, we also incur expenses throughout the season. A few generous individuals have stocked the team with the basic equipment in our first few seasons, however some new equipment needs to be purchased and some older equipment needs to be replaced from time-to-time. In addition, we like to host our own UD DC Alumni Club in-season party/BBQ. The fee charged to each player is pooled into a single lump sum, from which expenses are drawn for that season. Whatever is left-over at season end is used to reduce the per-player cost of the post-season tournament.

As a volunteer league, CAN takes the volunteer responsibilities of each team seriously. The most important responsibility of each team is participation. Poor participation is bad for every team and the league itself, which is why CAN imposes penalties on teams which forfeit games; therefore, we take participation seriously. No one is expected to come to every game, nor to make any specific quota. All that we ask is that you show up when you say you're going to show up, and that you do so on-time. With regard to practices (listed below), attendance is always voluntary.

Tentative practice schedule:

  • Saturday, August 16, 11:30 am
  • Wednesday, August 20, 6:00 pm
  • Saturday, August 23, 11:30 am
  • Sunday, August 24, 10:30 am (hopefully a scrimmage)
